Affordable housing forgotten on budget night – WA Senator

Media Release – Senator Scott Ludlam – May 10th, 2011

The Budget is silent on the crisis in affordable housing, the Australian Greens said tonight.

The Greens housing spokesperson, Senator for Western Australia Scott Ludlam, noted, “The only good housing news in the budget reflects the Greens win on preserving the National Rental Affordability Scheme.

“Apart from that, the housing affordability agenda has stalled.

“The Housing Affordability Fund is ending in 2012/13 rather than taking note of the many ways it could have been improved.

“Staffing and departmental budgets are down. Spending to assist homeless Australians is flat. The last of the social housing spend from the stimulus package is running dry.

“The only things going up are the unbelievable rents people are paying.

Senator Ludlam said the calculated inflationary policies of successive federal governments had encouraged speculation and blown out the cost of housing.

“The 2011-12 budget entrenches the status quo and will disappoint anyone hoping for leadership from the Federal Government – we will be working hard to turn this around in the run to the tax roundtable later this year.”
