Greens call for complete review of James Price Point gas hub

Australian Greens spokesperson on the Kimberley, Senator Rachel Siewert, says today’s Supreme Court ruling must lead to a complete review of the development of an LNG hub at James Price Point.

“The companies now have the perfect opportunity to reconsider the location of the Hub and move it away from James Price Point,” Senator Siewert said today.

“The state and Federal Governments must also seriously reconsider their approach to the future of this project

“Today’s decision emphasises the need to find an alternative site for the LNG Hub.

“Assessment of technically and economically viable gas processing options outside the Kimberley must now start, while still ensuring that economic benefits from natural resources extracted in the region flow to Traditional Owners.

“The threat of compulsory acquisition was a significant factor in the deal struck with the Kimberley Land Council.

“The WA Government undermined the negotiation process by virtue of this threat, which has led to ongoing community dissent and unrest.

“Throughout this process, the WA Government has taken a development at any cost mentality, this must change.

“It is time for all parties concerned to realise there are better options for this development,” Senator Siewert concluded.
