Battle Hardening Against Cyber Soldiers

by lissnup

An overview of key points to bear in mind or tactics to bring into play in case of an online incursion by members of anyone’s so-called “Cyber Army”

Harsh as it might seem, treat all former contacts that reappear after an absence with neutral (not hostile) caution. Accounts do get hacked, and occasionally, people do get recruited to “the other team”. If you had a really trusted contact and you didn’t put a challenge/response protocol* in place so you could verify their identity, then you have to assume there is a 50% chance they are not the person you once knew until they can prove themselves.

*Establish a challenge/response protocol with your trusted contacts. This is an agreed question you can ask the other person and an agreed response they must give. Like a password reminder. Tip: Do NOT use any of your existing password reminder Q&A’s!!

New accounts, especially breathlessly dramatic ones, should also be treated with measured caution. Wait for verification of all news, especially any that will have serious or long term repercussions. We learned this the hard way when a very plausible fraud appeared on Twitter in the middle of protest and declared that bit.ly shortened links were blocked in Iran. The ensuing panic and last minute changes caused a lot of people a lot of unneccessary extra effort.

Breaking News” reports always seem to demand an urgent response, where in fact they should be treated as “unconfirmed news“. As we all know, a lie is halfway around the social network world before the truth has got its pants on. So, as always, wait and verify, verify, verify. Remember that even the most experienced social media users and big name mass media outlets like the BBC, CNN etc have all been fooled by fake news. If you do happen to post a false report in good faith, you should be prepared to spend at least as much time retracting it and letting everyone know, than the time you spent sharing it.

Mark unconfirmed status updates as UNCONFIRMED or UNCONF. Do not remove text that identifies news as unconfirmed when re-tweeting or re-posting.

Watch out for private message requests or emails containing sensational news, documents, image, videos etc. asking you to share news. Suggest to whoever sent it that they post it themselves and you (might) share their update. If they claim to be unable to use or create a social network account, suggest they use mail is instantly posted as a blog that can be activated and shared. Look for the information being shared with you privately using search to see if it can be verified, or if anyone is posting warnings about it.

Watch out for people re-using images from unrelated events. Use Google or Tin Eye to search for images by url or by uploading them.

Check for images having been altered using special analysis tools like Image Metadata Manager or JPEGSnoop

Take responsibility for your online safety and security.

  • Change to a strong password and keep changing it, if not daily then as often as you can.
  • Scan your computer to check for intrusions, keyloggers, rootkits, malware, and trojans and keep your security software up to date.
  • Make sure that your recovery details for websites like Twitter, FaceBook & blogs etc are accurate and up to date.
  • Protect the email accounts you use to register with websites and services.
  • Use https to acces websites and services, so that when you do connect, the information you send is encrypted.
  • Copy and paste log in names and passwords rather than type them.
  • Do no store unencrypted user names and passwords on your computer.
  • Protect files on you computer or on external storage devices or removab le storage like flash drives, SD cards or USB sticks using encryption, such as TrueCrypt.
  • Use a password on all your devices.

Be alert for apparently innocent requests for information about your own or anyone else’s details, such as location, online activity, other connections, friends or contacts.

#perth needs help for angel hands to help address domestic violence #VAW – please support a courageous Dr

from my friend and colleague Athenae…

Hi

Attached is a media release from angelhands asking for help to publicise its campaign to raise $50,000 to facilitate the continuation of its services for victims of personal violence.
Perth-based angelhands was founded by Dr Ann O’Neill, who herself was a victim of violence when her two children were shot dead by her estranged husband.
If you are able to help out by running a story, angelhands would be really grateful, and has people who are able to share their stories.
Contact numbers are at the bottom of the release, or give me a call for further info.
Best wishes
 Athanae

#waterfront lockout & it’s not #d12 #ows: POAGS lockout of 100 workers is “industrial extremism” – Greens

POAGS lockout of 100 workers is“industrial extremism” – Greens
Media Release: Scott Ludlam, Senator for Western Australia. Tuesday December 13th, 2011

More than 100 workers in Fremantle and Bunbury locked out of their workplaces today are the targets of an unacceptable campaign of industrial extremism by stevedoring company POAGS, the Australian Greens said today.

Greens transport spokesperson, Senator for Western Australia Scott Ludlam, said the workers were being targeted after using work bans to protest about safety concerns and POAGS dragging out Agreement negotiations for 12 months.

“Under current law workers must give 72 hours notice of a strike, but the bosses can go on strike without warning. We saw this extremism from Alan Joyce at Qantas, now we’re seeing it from POAGS.

“These workers have legitimate concerns about safety and a legitimate grievance over the company’s unreasonable delay in reaching an Enterprise Agreement.”

“The work bans, voted on and endorsed MUA members in accordance to the Fair Work Act, would have seen working continuing at the ports but with measures taken to minimise the risk of further injuries on site. POAGS unsuccessfully attempted to have the work bans removed at a Fair Work hearing over the weekend and, having lost that bid, have resorted to industrial extremism.”

POAGS is owned by Chris Corrigan’s company Qube Logistics. Mr Corrigan shot to notoriety with his attempt to smash the Maritime Union in 1998, which was ruled illegal by the High Court.

“The Greens Member for Melbourne Adam Bandt recently introduced a bill to compel companies to give 72 hours notice of a lock-out, and prevent them using extreme industrial action as a legal tactic. The actions of POAGS reinforce the need for this bill.” said Senator Ludlam. “These workers want to work and to work in safety. Denying them that right is a disgrace.”

#australia new Attorney General faces job of undoing damage – restoring freedoms. via crikey.com #wikileaks #assange

Nicola Roxon‘s appointment as Australia’s first female Attorney-General presents several opportunities to address issues handled poorly by Robert McClelland.

McClelland’s period as Attorney-General was characterised by an apparent readiness to accede to virtually any demands for greater regulation that emerged from the Commonwealth bureaucracy. ASIO’s powers were extended — in an blatant effort to enable to spy on WikiLeaks — and a bill to enable foreign governments to obtain information about what Australians have been doing online and with mobile phone services remains under parliamentary consideration, despite criticism from the government’s own MPs. McClelland also appeared unable to comprehend the basic requirements of his role as First Law Officer, when he arbitrarily concluded that Julian Assange had acted illegally in relation to WikiLeaks’s US diplomatic cables, before an Australian Federal Police investigation concluded he was wrong.

Roxon, who has a strong legal background, would do well to commence her spell at attorney-general by taking a far more sceptical view of bureaucratic demands for ever-greater powers for law enforcement and intelligence agencies. She could start by reading the bipartisan report of the Joint Select Committee on Cyber-Safety’s report on the Cybercrime Bill, which while inadequate, spells out a number of flaws in that bill.

She could also make an unequivocal statement that Julian Assange is, once his legal obligations in Sweden are exhausted one way or another, welcome to return to Australia where he will be afforded the full legal protection to which an Australian citizen is entitled.

Roxon has also inherited privacy from Brendan O’Connor, who was Australia’s first minister for privacy. O’Connor himself was a diligent advocate for privacy and a discussion paper on a statutory right to privacy remains on foot. But the government’s overall willingness to protect privacy must be strongly questioned, courtesy of its willingness to sign up to US-inspired trade treaties that remove basic privacy protections at the behest of the copyright industry, and its ongoing consideration of ISP data retention laws.

Roxon could send a strong signal that privacy is an important issue for the government, and that it is prepared to work to protect Australians’ privacy, including in the face of attempts by other countries to erode it.

Weekly Series: The Creature From Jekyll Island

Part 25: A Pessimistic Scenario

We believe that the information contained in G. Edward Griffin’s seminal book is essential in understanding how our financial world has been imploded by a banking elite that seeks to consolidate control into even fewer hands and end the prospect of self-directed economic freedom. Please read these weekly chapter summaries and share with everyone you know — especially your children. This book is an incredibly interesting detective story about the history of money that successfully overcomes the hurdle of dry economics and history textbooks. This is a book that should be on every shelf, and should be taught in every school. BUY HERE

OUR MISSION AND HOW YOU CAN BECOME ACTIVE
We want to help contribute to the mass awakening that is taking place. The mainstream media is part of a system that aims to keep people ignorant and unquestioning. It is essential that information continues to flow from the alternative media, so that opposing viewpoints can be heard. The global movement toward Internet censorship is troubling. We are optimistic, though, because history shows that all attempts to oppress free humanity are doomed to failure. However, we can no longer remain passive; the period of cold, creeping tyranny that legislates its way into power is over. When oppression reaches this "hot" stage, we need activists. The next period will be defined by how well we are able to overcome our conditioning and resist what we know in our hearts is the wrong course. You can become active through education, spreading the word, but, most importantly, practice what you preach. Tyranny is no match for freedom.

Liberty, Love, and Peace will Prevail!
