McGowan’s uranium backflip betrays Labor voters as well as environmental protection principles
Media release: Senator for Western Australia Scott Ludlam, Monday January 23rd, 2012

The Australian Greens condemned WA Labor leader Mark McGowan’s announcement today that uranium mines would continue to operate under a Labor State Government.

The Greens spokesperson for nuclear affairs, Senator for Western Australia Scott Ludlam, said Mr McGowan should ask his party members their view before abandoning their opposition to uranium mining.

“Labor can’t have it both ways on uranium mining. It is a dangerous, toxic industry that operates to provide fuel to the dangerous, toxic nuclear energy sector. If Labor is opposed to uranium mining they should make their position clear.

“Mr McGowan has spoken of providing certainty to the industry. It is far better to let the nuclear industry know it is certain they have no future in Western Australia.

“If Labor is elected in 2013, and there is one operational uranium mine in WA at that time, it will be one too many. If they are elected in 2017, who knows how bad the situation will be after two terms of the rampantly pro-uranium Barnett government. Uranium mining in the Northern Territory has a sorry history – as it does all over the world – and we do not want to see it replicated in our state,” said Senator Ludlam.

  1. How many Labor MPs have expressed a pro-uranium position? Very few which is indicative of the “I, me, myself” McGowan riding roughshod over the team in just a few hours. Can we expect another dancing boy for industry? He was certainly that when he sabotaged (sacked) Geoff Gallop’s committee on hazardous waste (the 3Cs) to the delight of the appallingly dangerous hazardous waste industry, the duplicitous CCI and haz. waste lobbyists, Burke and Grill. Lest we forget.
