Premier resorts to threats in quest for James Price Point
The Australian Greens say WA Premier Colin Barnett’s threat to use State Agreement Acts to lock in the construction of a LNG hub at James Price Point underline his obsession with development in the Kimberley.
“The Premier is seeking to force Woodside and the joint venture partners to his preferred outcome,” Senator Rachel Siewert said today.
“He is governing in the interests of short term economic gain and industrialisation, in the expectation that a LNG hub at James Price Point is just the stepping stone to the Kimberley becoming an industrial powerhouse.
“Absolutely no regard is being paid to the long term consequences of this project.
“The Premier’s obsession with James Price Point shows his blinkered commitment to development, with no consideration of issues like sustainable investment, tourism, climate change, cultural heritage, environmental protection or biodiversity.
“It is economically viable for Browse gas to be processed elsewhere, and yet the Premier is leaving no stone unturned to make sure that the James Price Point hub goes ahead.
“As more questions are asked about the future of this project, I’m sure the Permier will continue apply pressure to force the hand of business,” Senator Siewert concluded.
