Alison is being proper and factual so allow me to be less than that…
Taxpayers’ money is being spent to prop up a medical service that is limited by religion who seek to maintain a dangerous dogma about contraception and sexuality.
It’s bad enough that the "celibate" men of the church impose ancient rules on women, but for the Barnett Govt to support that with taxpayers money is outrageous, especially while denying funds to groups like the LEARN Autism Foundation, which is now closing.
Health should be about providing service, not religious limits…
New public Midland Hospital fails to provide full range of services, say WA Greens
16 May 2012
Following answers to questions in Parliament, WA Greens Member for East Metropolitan Region Alison Xamon has strongly denounced the decision to award the tender for the publicly-funded Midland Hospital to St John of God Health Care.
In answer to the questions, the Minister for Health confirmed that the new Midland campus will only provide severely limited reproductive services and no sterilisation or contraceptive services at all.
“I am appalled at this decision which will see the residents of the East Metropolitan Region miss out on essential health services,” Ms Xamon said.
“The Government has stated on the record that SJOGHC ‘best meets the State’s requirements’ to operate this public, taxpayer-funded hospital,” Ms Xamon said. “Yet clearly this is not true.
“The Government’s response that the people of Midland can go to other places to get their services is highly offensive.
“The reality is the decision to award the contract to SJOGHC means we are taking away services from the people of Midland. This new hospital will service the north-east corridor which is home to around 200,000 people. These people deserve to have the full range of health services close to their homes.”
Ms Xamon said she was extremely concerned that the rights and health of the patient would no longer come first when medical decisions were made.
“We need to ensure our medical establishments are free from ideological constraints so they can give the best possible advice and holistic care to all patients that walk through their door,” Ms Xamon said.
“These matters are often complex, with patients having several needs concurrently.
“For example, a woman who presents at the emergency department after having been raped will require a comprehensive range of services, including counselling that includes the option to take the morning-after pill.
“And it is unclear how the Hospital would propose to respond to a woman who presents with an ectopic pregnancy.
“These essential options would not be provided under SJOGHC’s management.
“And then there are grey areas – would a person presenting with an STD receive advice to use condoms? We cannot be sure, because a situation has been created where ideology can be put before the patient’s best health interests.”
Ms Xamon said if the Government insisted on continuing with SJOHC as the preferred provider, the only acceptable solution was to include a mix of publicly-operated beds within the campus that ensured these essentially services remained.
“I am calling on the Government to commit to providing publicly-operated beds and services at the hospital, to ensure the full range of health choices are provided publicly in Midland,” she said.
“This was found to be the solution to the problems that a wholly-privatised campus raised in Bunbury and Joondalup – the Government must commit to a similar arrangement in Midland as a matter of priority.”
