Coalition refuses to drop plan to privatise ABC

Australian Greens communications spokesperson – Senator for Western Australia Scott Ludlam. 18 June 2013.

The Coalition today refused to rule out selling the ABC, voting against a Greens motion reaffirming the Parliament’s commitment to keeping the broadcaster in public hands.

“Today the Greens tested the Coalition’s real intentions, and it turned out Malcolm Turnbull’s fine words are as useful as a non-core promise,” said Greens communications spokesperson Senator Scott Ludlam.

“A plan to privatise the ABC has been circulated around the Victorian Liberal Party. In the Senate the Coalition had a chance to distance itself from this extremism, but instead they confirmed they can’t be trusted with the nation’s public broadcasters.

"The Coalition assumes it will waltz into office regardless of how extreme its policies are. The public must be vigilant.

"With the concentration of private media ownership in Australia amongst the worst in the world, the last thing we need is the privatisation of the two public broadcasters.

"The Coalition has form on this. The Howard Government slashed funding for public broadcasting and stacked the ABC board with reactionary culture warriors and Coalition cheerleaders.

"Today Tony Abbott was asked to make a concrete commitment to our national broadcasters staying in public hands – and he refused.”
