Dear friends,

In early September Australia’s Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse will commence wide-ranging public hearings. This is a historic moment: As the Commission’s chief executive, Janet Dines, said recently, the six Royal Commissioners and their staff will be "bearing witness on behalf of the nation."

The same holds true for news professionals who will cover the Royal Commission’s hearings. With that in mind, tomorrow – on Friday August 30 – Dart Centre Asia Pacific is running a one-day forum in Sydney for media professionals, to promote informed, accurate and ethical reporting on the Royal Commission and its inquiry.

The forum, "Reporting Responsibly on the Royal Commission Into Abuse," will be held at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in Harris Street, Ultimo, Sydney on Friday August 30 from 9am-6pm and is open to all working journalists free of charge.

We are especially pleased that The Hon. Justice Peter McClellan AM, chair of the Royal Commission, will address the Dart Centre forum on Friday morning. The morning will also include two expert panels: "Understanding the experiences of those who have been abused – issues over a life span," featuring abuse survivor Peter Gogarty; the mother of a survivor, Pat Feenan; and Leonie Sheedy, of the Care Leavers Australian Network; and "Investigation, Policy and Perpetrators," focusing on Australian law, reform efforts and the mind of the perpetrator, with speakers including Frank McGuire, a State of Victoria Member of Parliament and award-winning former journalist; lawyer John Ellis; and psychologist Gerard Webster.

The afternoon will feature journalist-to-journalist workshops covering craft, ethics, and other issues related to reporting on the Royl Commission’s hearings and the broader issues involved, with the ABC’s Suzie Smith; Marc Bryant of the Hunter Institute of Mental Health; Joanne McCarthy of the Newcastle Herald, and Dart Center executive director Bruce Shapiro, who has traveled from New York to participate.

I hope you’ll consider joining us for this important programme. Pre-registration is required: If you wish to attend, please email my colleague Aly Walsh, aly.walsh.

Best wishes
